Google Takes New Privacy Steps

I was looking on some of our required blogs and stopped on John Battelle's Searchblog. The article about google caught my eye since we were discussing google in class this week. Google collects an outstanding amount of information about all of their users. What is being searched, IP addresses and cookie files are stored on googles servers. It is stored on there for as long as it is usefull. Im sure this makes some users uneasy that all of this information is accessable to Goggle, but im sure other people such as marketers are foaming at the mouth to get this info. They are plannin on making the info anonymos after it is stored after 18-24 months. Why 18-24 months? It seems like a long time to keep this information. What are they doing with this info? Are they using it for
advertising purposes? They say they will be making the searches more private and allow for searches to be off the record. Will these new privacy practices make it easier for people to search for dangerous items with out being caught or will it just skew the results on how much pornography is looked at each day. I guess we will have to wait and see the true effect of these privacy changes.
